What is Zovirax?
Zovirax (generic name: acyclovir) is an antiviral medication meant to slow the development of herpes in the body. Zovirax doesn't cure the infection, but helps minimize its harmful symptoms. Zovirax is effective for treating such illnesses as shingles, chicken pox, cold sores and genital herpes.
What is the most important information I should know about Zovirax?
Remember that you shouldn't stop using the drug if you notice that the symptoms have disappeared, because the infection may still remain uncured. Follow the complete course of treatment.
Start taking Zovirax as soon as you detected the infection which has symptoms like burning, tingling and blisters.
Herpes infections are contagious, so you should avoid coming into contact with other people until the infection is cured. Do not touch your eyes if you have just touched the affected area. Wash your hands frequently to prevent the infection from spreading.
In case you have an allergy to acyclovir or valacyclovir (Valtrex, for instance), do not use Zovirax. If you have problems with kidneys, consult with your doctor before starting treatment with Zovirax, as you may need special dosage adjustment and medical monitoring.
FDA pregnancy category B. Zovirax isn't expected to be harmful for a fetus. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, talk to your doctor beforehand. The medication may appear in breast milk, so avoid using Zovirax if you are breastfeeding a baby.
Remember that a pregnant woman suffering from herpes infection is likely to pass it to her baby during childbirth. So if you are going to become pregnant you should consider the infection treatment beforehand.
How should I take Zovirax?
It is recommended you take the medication with water to decrease its impact on your kidneys. In order to prevent stomach upset you can take Zovirax with food.
Shake the oral suspend before using it. Take a medical cup or a marked measuring spoon to make sure you use the right dose. Do not stop taking Zovirax before the course of treatment is over.
Take into account that Zovirax doesn't treat viral infections like cold and flu.
The medication should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
What happens if I miss a dose?
You should take the missed dose of Zovirax as soon as you remember. In case it is almost time for the next dose of Zovirax, you should skip the missed one and after that return to your regular dosage schedule. Never double the dose to catch up – it may lead to serious side effects.
What happens if I overdose?
In case overdose is suspected, seek emergency medical attention. The most common symptoms include seizure, hallucinations and urinating less than usual.
