Prilosec
Uses
Prilosec is used to treat stomach and esophagus problems that are associated with an excessive production of stomach acid, like ulcers, erosive esophagitis, GERD, and Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome. Prilosec may also be used in conjunction with antibiotics to treat ulcers.
Dosage
Prilosec comes in the form of a delayed release 20 mg tablet that has to be taken every day for a course of 14 days. It has to be taken before food. Prilosec should not be taken beyond a 14 day period, nor should you begin another 14-day cycle before 4 months after the first 14 day course. The tablet must be swallowed whole, and not crushed or broken in any form.
Warnings
If you have stomach or liver problems or any allergies, consult your physician before starting Prilosec. If you are pregnant, consult your doctor before starting Prilosec - this medication should be used only as needed during pregnancy. There is not enough information about whether Prilosec passes to the infant through breast milk. For this reason, avoid taking this drug when you are breast feeding.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take the dose as soon as you remember. If the time is too close to the next dose, skip the dose entirely, and move onto the next dose. Continue with your normal dosage schedule. Do not take a double dose of Prilosec to compensate for the missed dose.
Side effects
Some amount of nausea, gas, diarrhea, stomachache constipation, nausea, headache, loss of appetite, or dizziness is to be expected. These symptoms will disappear when your body gets used to the medication. If these symptoms persist, consult your doctor. If you experience back or joint aches, sleep disturbances, nervousness, cough, chest pain, excessive thirst, hair loss, fatigue, stomach swelling, urination changes, vision changes, consult your doctor immediately. If there are allergic reactions to the medication like skin rashes, itching, hives, throat constrictions, swelling of the face etc., discontinue use, and seek emergency medical care immediately.
Storage
Prilosec has to be stored between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit in a dry place away from light.
Overdose
If you notice blurred vision, accelerated heartbeat, confusion, excessive sweating, or seizures, seek emergency medical care, or visit your nearest poison control center immediately.
