Prevacid

Uses

Prevacid works to heal stomach ulcers, intestinal ulcers, erosive esophagitis – injuries to the delicate lining of the esophagus - and other conditions that may be caused by the excessive production of stomach acid. Prevacid decreases the amount of stomach acid produced, and helps treat conditions like Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome.

Dosage

Prevacid comes in the form of an extended release capsule that is meant to be swallowed whole once a day, and before food. If you cannot swallow the capsule whole, break the capsule over a spoon of applesauce, and mix the pellets into the apple sauce. Swallow this applesauce mixture whole without biting or chewing the pellets. Prevacid should be taken as prescribed by your physician. Do not take more or less of this medication. Do not stop the medication without consulting your doctor, even if you find that your condition is better.

Warnings

Prevacid is not meant for those who have liver disease. If you have any form of liver disease, inform your doctor so he can monitor your dosage schedule and alter your prescription accordingly. Prevacid belongs to the Pregnancy category B of the FDA. This means that is has not been found to have detrimental effects on a fetus. If you’re pregnant, however, consult your doctor before beginning Prevacid medication. There is not enough information to indicate whether Prevacid can be transmitted though breast milk. If you are nursing, consult your physician before starting Prevacid.

Missed dosage

In case you miss a dose, take the tablet as soon as your remember to. If it’s too close to the time of the next dose however, skip the dose entirely, and simply resume your normal medication schedule. Don’t double the dosage to make up for the missed dosage without consulting your doctor.

Side effects

If you notice any allergic reactions to Prevacid, like hives, skin rashes, itching, throat constrictions, swelling of the face etc., stop taking Prevacid and seek medical attention. Some amount of diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, headache, or abdominal pain is fairly common. If you experience these, consult your doctor, but there’s no need to stop taking Prevacid. If you notice side effects that are different from these, or that are bothersome, contact your medical practitioner immediately.

Storage

Keep Prevacid away from heat and moisture, in tightly locked containers at room temperature.

Overdose

There is not enough that is known about the symptoms of Prevacid overdose. If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency medical attention.
