Nexium

Uses

This is a medication that’s used to treat symptoms of acid reflux disease, which is also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). In GERD, erosions are caused in the esophagus due to the churning up of the stomach acid. The fine lining of the esophagus is damaged, causing heartburn. Nexium works to heal the esophagus, and also works in conjunction with other medications to prevent the formation of stomach ulcers by reducing the amount of stomach acid that’s produced.

Dosage

Nexium normally comes in the form of a delayed-release capsule to be taken orally, at least an hour before food. The capsule is meant to be swallowed whole, and must not be crushed or broken. If you find that it’s hard to swallow the capsule whole, take a spoon of apple sauce, open the capsule and mix the pellets into the sauce. Swallow the applesauce, without chewing the pellets mixed inside.

Warnings

Nexium is not mean for use for those who are suffering from liver disease. Your doctor will be able to monitor your dosage, or alter the schedule as per your needs. Nexium falls in the pregnancy category B section, which means it is not likely to cause harm to an unborn fetus. If you’re pregnant, however, do consult your doctor before starting this medication. It is not known if Nexium has adverse effects on breast milk. If you’re nursing, consult your doctor before taking Nexium. Those who’re on penicillin medication have been known to suffer serious side effects from Nexium. In addition to this, nearly all anti bacterial agents are linked to pseudo membranous colitis, and therefore patients who suffer from diarrhea after taking anti bacterial agents should be monitored vigilantly.

Missed dose

In case of a missed dosage, take the missed capsule as soon as you remember to. If it’s too close to the next dose, however, slip the missed dose, and continue with your normal dosage schedule. Do not double the medication without consulting your physician.

Side effects

Headache, diarrhea, cough and stomach aches are common side effects of Nexium, which may go away on their own. If you notice more severe symptoms like itching and skin rashes, swelling, or breathing difficulties, seek emergency medical care. If you notice intense side effects like chest, stomach or throat pains, or severe vomiting, consult your physician immediately.

Storage

Nexium is recommended to be stored at 77 degrees Fahrenheit with excursions permissible between 59 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit.

Overdose

Overdose symptoms may include dizziness, shortness of breath, lack of coordination, and even seizures. If you notice these, seek emergency medical attention immediately.
