What is Lipitor?

Lipitor (generic name: atorvastatin) is a cholesterol-lowering drug meant to block the cholesterol production in the body. By decreasing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, as well as total cholesterol, in the blood, Lipitor is effective for preventing hardening of the arteries or heart disease which may result in heart stroke, attack or vascular disease.

What is the most important information I should know about Lipitor?

A low amount of patients that used Lipitor reported a condition which led to the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue that, in its turn, is likely to result in kidney failure. If you notice sudden muscle pain or tenderness, flu or fever symptoms, muscle weakness or dark colored urine, you should see your health care provider right away.

In case you have such conditions as underactive thyroid, diabetes, kidney disease, a blood disorder or a muscle disorder, you should consult with your doctor before starting Lipitor treatment.

While you are using Lipitor you are recommended to give up fat-saturated food with a high level of cholesterol, as it can decrease the medication's effect. Do not drink alcohol while you are under Lipitor, as triglyceride levels may grow and your liver can be damaged.

Never take Lipitor without discussing it with your doctor, if you are currently using any other drug like herbal products, minerals, vitamins and prescription medications.

Tell your health care provider if you have such conditions as diabetes, liver disease, underactive thyroid, kidney disease or muscle disorder.

FDA pregnancy category X. Lipitor can be harmful for an unborn baby leading to birth defects. You should choose an efficient, better non-hormone birth control method in case you are taking Lipitor, as it can make usual birth control forms less powerful. It is unknown if Lipitor can affect a nursing baby, so if you are breastfeeding, don't take the drug without informing your doctor first.

Lipitor isn't recommended for use in children younger than 10 years.

How should I take Lipitor?

Usually Lipitor is taken one time a day, at the same time. Do not exceed the dose of Lipitor and follow your standard dosage schedule.

The drug can be taken with or without food. Use Lipitor with a glass of water.

Generally Lipitor constitutes a part of a complete course of treatment, along with exercise, diet and weight control.

Test your blood regularly while you are using Lipitor to be sure your health condition is improving.

Keep Lipitor away from light, moisture and heat and store it at room temperature.

What happens if I miss a dose?

You should take the missed dose of Lipitor asap. Never use an additional dose to make up for the missed one.

What happens if I overdose?

Although Lipitor overdosage is unlikely to lead to life-threatening side effects, you should seek immediate medical help as soon as it is suspected.
