Allegra
Uses
Allegra is an antihistamine that helps to relieve sneezing, itchy nose and eyes, watery eyes and nose, rhinorrhea and other symptoms typically associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis. It can be used by adults and children who are more than 6 years old.
Dosage Instructions
Allegra comes in the form of a tablet or capsule that has to be taken orally. Generally, it is taken in the morning and the evening, with a full glass of water. You can take it before or after food.
Warnings
If you have heart disease, or kidney and liver problems, you are advised not to take this medication. Your physician will be able to advise you regarding your prescription, and may need to monitor your health when you are taking the medication. Allegra comes with a FDA category C for pregnancy certification. This means that the effects of the medication on fetal development have not yet been ascertained. Pregnant women are therefore, discouraged from taking Allegra. Allegra may or may not be transferred to a nursing infant through breast milk. For this reason, lactating mothers are also advised to avoid this medication, because the full nature of this breast milk contamination has not yet been recognized.
Dosage
You are advised not to miss a dose of your Allegra medication. If you miss a dose, however, try to take the medication as soon as possible. If you remember to take your missed dose too close to the time of the next dose, give the first dose a miss, and continue with your normal dosage schedule. Do not increase your dosage without consulting your doctor. Do not mix your dose with antacids - wait at least 2 hours after taking your Allegra medication to take antacids.
Storage
Allegra tablets and capsules are advised to be stored between 20 and 25 degrees C, i.e. 68 to 77 degree F. Keep in a cool dark place, away from excessive moisture.
Side Effects
If you notice any of the following side effects, stop taking your medication immediately, and consult your physician - any swelling of the face, tongue or lips. Other allergic reactions may also occur, like hives. Serious side effects are rare, but infections of the nose, throat and sinus, headaches and backaches have also been reported in extreme cases.
Overdose
Never take an increased dosage of allergy medication. If you do, however, look for the following symptoms - dizziness, dryness of the mouth and drowsiness.
