Allegra D
Uses
Allegra D is used to provide relief to a person suffering from itchy nose, itchy palate, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, nasal congestion and other symptoms that are normally associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis. It is used as a medication in adults and children aged 12 and above.
Dosage Instructions
Generally, Allegra is prescribed as a twice a day dosage of one tablet each. It should preferably not be taken with food. In those patients who have decreased renal function, an initial dosage of one tablet per day is recommended.
Warnings
Children below the age of 12 should not take Allegra D. Allegra D is not recommended for use in those patients who suffer from diabetes; thyroid problems, kidney or liver disease. Patients who have glaucoma or increased pressure in the eye; or suffer from urinary retention or an enlarged prostate, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, or heart disease, are also required to be under special monitoring while under the medication or may need to have their dosage adjusted appropriately. The FDA also places Allegra D under the Pregnancy category C. This means that the effects of the medication on an unborn fetus haven’t yet been clearly defined, and therefore pregnant women are advised not to take the medication prior to a consultation with their doctor. Also, consult your doctor before taking Allegra D if you’re planning to conceive a child. It is also not known whether Allegra D can be passed onto breast milk. Therefore nursing mothers are not encouraged to take the medication.
Missed Dosage
If you forget to take a dose, simply make up before your next dose as soon as you remember to. If you remember too close to the time of your next dosage, then forget about the missed dosage, and continue as scheduled. Do not take a double dosage to make up for the missed one.
Side effects
A few side effects may be seen, and these include headaches, symptoms of cold, nausea, an upset stomach or insomnia. Side effects of Allegra D tend to be mild, but if you notice symptoms like fever, increased heat beat, dizziness or changes in mood, discontinue use, and consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately. You’re also not advised to undertake tasks that require the use of sharp mental faculties, like driving, while under Allegra D medication because of the drowsiness that results from the use of this drug.
Storage
Keep your Allegra D medication away from sunlight, and in a dry place at a temperature that’s between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit.
Over dosage
If you take more than the appropriate dosage of Allegra D you may notice mild symptoms like increased sweating and thirst, giddiness, headache, nausea, or more severe symptoms like tachycardia, precordial pain, palpitations, difficulty in micturition, muscular weakness and tenseness, insomnia, restlessness and anxiety.
